THIS TABLET MARKS THE LAND / UPON WHICH STOOD "FOUR CHIMNEYS" . / THE HOUSE OCCUPIED BY / GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON / AS HEADQUARTERS / DURING THE BATTLE OF LONG ISLAND / IN WHICH THE COUNCIL OF WAR / WAS HELD AUGUST 29, 1776, WHEN / IT WAS DECIDED TO WITHDRAW THE / AMERICAN ARMY FROM LONG ISLAND. / --- / ERECTED BY / LONG ISLAND STATE SOCIETY / DAUGHTERS OF THE REVOLUTION / 1929 /
